Post: The only person ever hit by space debris!

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A NASA satellite is expected to hit Earth on Friday afternoon. The satellite is reported to weigh six to seven tons roughly the size of a school bus.

Much of the satellite will burn up in the atmosphere dropping a dozen pieces to Earth.

There has only been one ever reported incident where space debris has fell on a person.

In 1997, a women called Lottie Williams was walking in a park in Tulsa, when she was hit on the shoulder by a piece of metal from space.
The piece of metal was later confirmed to be part of the Delta II rocket.

Williams was not injured in that incident and now that space junk threatens to fall on Earth again, she is sharing her experience, and she believes it could happen again.

Lottie said "I am assuming that we are safe now. On the other hand, if it was going to hit somewhere around in this area, I would be outdoors," she said.

Williams said it was magnificent to see a ball of fire race across the sky and that it was nothing but scary when she felt something fall on her shoulder.

Lottie said "I guess I was in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time, I haven't decided yet."

Williams said she does not plan to take cover on Friday afternoon. Instead, she will be watching.

Lottie said "You will not hear it coming, you just have to see it heading for you," she said.

Williams also said she believes lightning does not strike twice and she is praying that theory is the same for space junk.

NASA said it hope to expect the space debris to miss North America.

And she wasn't hurt? Damn, that piece of debris fell far further than 50-60 miles, and at the speed gravity would take you/it, I'm surprised it didn't take her whole arm off.

The object would have reached terminal velocity after about half a mile, so it wouldn't continue to gather speed. Also, you don't know how big it was, could have been really small.

Still, to be not hurt by it, is increadable. I found this article on the web

The speed that things fall to the earth depends on two things, how fast they started falling and how long they have been falling. The equation for finding that speed, v, is:
v = v0 + a*t

where v0 is the initial speed something began falling, a is the acceleration or change in velocity is causing it to fall, and t is the time it has been falling. If the object is falling on the earth, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2. So, if you drop something off a very tall building by just letting it go, letting v0 = 0, then after 10 seconds, it will be moving at 98 m/s. The weight of the object only matters if there is air resistance.

Actually, we get hit by mini space debris every day. Mostly from asteroids. But by the time it reaches the gravity of earth, its about the size of the pal of your hand. So when it hits your house, its a piece of dust :p

Rarely do they get bigger than 3 inches Winky Winky
