This new OS adds a boat load of new features, some of which were highly demanded by the Apply Community. They include, Multi-Tasking of 3rd Party Apps, enhanced mail, iBooks and many other features.

Some other features coming in the power-packed OS:

  • Spell Check
  • Bluetooth keyboard support
  • User-defined wallpaper
  • Tap to focus when recording video
  • Playlist creation and nested playlists.
  • Folders to better organize and access apps
  • Improved Mail with a unified inbox, fast inbox switching and threaded messages
  • Enhanced Enterprise support with even better data protection, mobile device management, wireless app distribution and more
  • Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform
  • Game Center
  • iBooks, the delightful new ebook reader and online bookstore recently debuted on the iPad.

Something users should be aware of, the Multi-Tasking is only avaible on the iPhone 3Gs, and specific iPod Touch models, namely ones made in late 2009 (32GB and 64GB).

Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, did have a comment on the lack of support for the feature on older models. Saying that, "the hardware just doesn't support it [multi-tasking]".

So it looks like users with the older models of the iPhone and iPod Touch will have to upgrade to newer models or miss out on the Multi-Tasking.

For developers the OS 4.0 Beta SDK is now available at developer.apple.com. For the rest of us, we can expect the update this Summer.
