(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Well lots of new iDevice hackers have joined NextGenUpdate. Alot have been asking what to do with the .ipsw files. The ipsw is an file that updates or restores your iPod's firmware.

I am going to tell you how to update or downgrade you iPod or iPhone.

Updating.
Say your on 2.2.1 or 3.1.2 or anything lower than 3.1.3 and say you want to update your iPod or iPhone but don't want to get the newest firmware because it's not jailbreakable on your device. So all you want to do is download the firmware you want (link at bottom). when it's done plug in your iDevice. Open up iTunes and click on your device on th side bar. Find the update button. Don't click it yet! When you click it hold down your shift key on your keyboard and click on update. Then a box will pop up asking you to locate the ipsw file. just locate it and click it. There you go! just let it do it's thing.

And downgrading is basically the same concept. instead update shift+click restore. and locate your ipsw file. I havent trid this with iOS4(4.0).

the problem is that you get error 1015 i think when you try to reboot to a different firmware once you're already 4.0

these are somewhat the steps i followed.

1. Shift and left click restore.
2. Choose 3.1.2
3. Then I get error 1015
4. Since my phone is now in dfu mode, I can use Blackrain to jailbreak (3.1.2 is now on my iphone even though I got the error).
5. Once Blackrain is done, phone is working, but I cannot connect to ATT. (if you have an itouch, you might be done already since it's working now)
6. I need to create a custom firmware if I want to use phone again. I open up Snowbreeeze to create my custom firmware. I chose 3.1.3 for my phone.
7. I run the program and wait for it to finish my custom firmware.
8. Once completed, I go back to step 1. Shift and click restore.
9. Choose my new custom firmware, and voila. I'm jailbroken again with 3.1.3
