And don't wear it out.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Not sure if anybody remembers GeoHot, a pretty famous modern-day hacker. First person to unlock iPhone, first jailbroken PS3 (sort of), and of course, he's the creator of blackra1n.

Blackra1n was a program released on 10/11 last year, which revolutionized the way jailbreaking worked. It modified the iDevice straight from the computer- no .ispw/firmware restoring required.

Unfortunately for us, GeoHot has been off of the jailbreaking scene for the past year or so.
But now he's returned, and releasing a new program called limera1n (being released on 10/11, one year anniversary of blackra1n).

What stands out about limera1n is that it's based on a bootrom exploit, meaning it cannot be patched with a firmware update. And unlike the SHAtter exploit, this exploit works on all iDevices, not just the 4th generation.

This means that limera1n will be able to jailbreak all current iDevices permanently. (Until Apple released the iPhone 5, that is.)

EDIT: More info:

The original post covers all you really need to know about limera1n, but here's some additional info that may be good reading:

The official website (owned by GeoHot) for limera1n is You must login or register to view this content.

This has been confirmed to be real by around 10 iPhone Devs (The people who make jailbreaking apps)

The iPhone Devs are not happy about this. Why?
There're a couple different reasons. The first one is a bit of selfishness on the Devs' part. GeoHot is releasing limera1n one day after GreenPois0n (The iPhone Devs' new tool to jailbreak all 4th generation devices) and they feel he is stealing a bit of the spotlight- OK, maybe more than just a bit of it.

The second reason is actually concerning the whole jailbreaking community. These bootrom exploits are very rare, and they're patched as soon as Apple makes a new generation of devices. But since both programs are being released in the same iPhone generation, they're going to be wasted, in a sense. There will be no usable bootrom exploit when the 5th generation iPhone comes out. While one of the tools could be postponed to prevent this, neither is backing down.
