iPhone OS 3.0 Guide
Everything you need to know about the new iPhone firmware.
by Scott Lowe
June 17, 2009 - With the launch of the iPhone 3G S right around the corner on June 19, Apple is gearing up for a whole new wave of iPhone sales, whether it be existing iPhone owners upgrading to the new unit or first-time iPhone buyers. Fortunately for those who fall into neither category and own iPhone 3G but don't want to spend the extra cash for the newest model, don't feel left out, a brand new firmware update was made available today to keep things fresh and interesting. iPhone OS 3.0 packs a number of performance tweaks as well as some major functional advancements to 3G-enabled iPhones (sorry, first-gen owners, no update for you). If you plan on upgrading your iPhone's firmware today, here is a complete overview of the OS 3.0's biggest features.
Cut, Copy & Paste
One of the biggest updates to iPhone OS 3.0 is actually one of the simplest: integrated copy, cut, and paste functionality. Prior to OS 3.0, relaying text information from one text message to another or sharing a link URL on the iPhone was pretty cumbersome, but now users can grab entire blocks of text and share transport them to any application with text boxes. To select, cut, copy, or paste text, simply touch and hold an area of the text entry area and release, after which three buttons will appear over the text along with a dragable selection area. From there it's simply a matter of choosing the desired function (cut, copy, paste) and transporting it to the desired are or application.
Users are also able to cut, copy, and paste images from a source text block and transfer them to any image-supporting program. Unfortunately the image cut, copy, and paste does not enable you to get around AT&T's continued lack of support for multimedia messaging on the iPhone – you'll have to wait until "later this year" for that.
Landscape Text Entry
Another small but crucial update to iPhone OS 3.0 is universal support of landscape text entry, which had prior only been reserved for certain applications. Now users can use the iPhone's built-in accelerometer to tilt their device and type with a wider on-screen keyboard whilst text messaging, writing memos, web browsing and more.
The inclusion of a landscape keyboard makes text entry on the iPhone a little easier for those with large fingers or who haven't been able to adjust completely to 100% touch-enabled functionality.
MMS and Tethering…eventually
From day one, the iPhone has been strangely devoid of support for multimedia messaging services (MMS) – a feature common in just about every handset, smartphone or otherwise, on the market – however, now Apple is finally integrating MMS support into the OS 3.0 software. Before you jump out of your chair and rejoice, however, you should note that North American users will not be able to use MMS right away. Instead, AT&T has opted to roll out MMS support on the iPhone "later this summer." Specific details on the MMS rollout are scarce, but with any luck AT&T will catch up soon.
Another triumph on Apple's behalf and a failure on that of AT&T is the inclusion of internet tethering, which enables users to use their iPhone as a go-anywhere wireless modem for their Bluetooth-enabled computer. Unfortunately though, AT&T does not currently support tethering on iPhone's 3G networks and has released no further information on the matter.
Search
Users who upgrade their iPhones today will also get a handy new feature in the form of Search, a device-wide search function that makes finding information, regardless of where it is located on the device, quick and easy.
Search pull information from certain applications, including your contact list and iPod functions.
Improved iTunes Functionality
The ability to download music directly to your iPhone via an iTunes Music Store is one handy way to get music on the go, but now Apple has expanded downloadable content for the iPhone to include iTunes' movie, television, music video, and audiobook offerings. Now, with OS 3.0, users can download every type of media available on iTunes without ever syncing with a computer.
Additionally, users can now redeem gift certificates and coupon codes directly from their iPhone and access multiple accounts from one device, making iTunes integration almost completely independent of physical computer connections. Now all we have to do is get Apple to integrate wireless syncing…
Miscelaneous Features
In addition to the major features listed above, Apple has also incorporated a dozen of other software functions and other improvements to the iPhone firmware with OS 3.0. Here's a rundown of the best of the rest:
Voice Memos: First-party audio recording app.
SMS Preview Shutoff: Users can now disable SMS previews without using password access.
Web Browsing Enhancements: faster page loads, autofill, and username/password saving.
Parental Controls: Limit child access to music, videos, and applications.
Stereo Bluetooth: Wireless Bluetooth headphones now compatible.
WiFi: Automatically log-in to previously established hotspots.
Shake to Shuffle: Use the iPhone's accelerometer to enable shuffle in music playback.
Sync Notes: Sync notes made in the Notes application with your computer.
YouTube: You can now log-in to your YouTube account to browse your favorite vids.
