If you have an iPad 1, you can jailbreak tethered using redsn0w 0.9.8 b4

If you have an iPad 2, you have to downgrade to iOS 4.3.3 and use JailbreakMe.com 3.0. There is no jailbreak available for iPad 2 for iOS 4.3.4 and above, as of yet.

You can't jailbreak the iPad 2 unless you're in 4.3.3 but you can downgrade if you have the SHSH blobs save.
