Previous rumors suggested the release will be on October 7th while pre-orders will be sooner starting on September 9th.
If this rumor checks out then the US should have the iPhone a bit earlier. But TechDay is not exactly an Apple rumor source. We will wait and see.

Apple will launch its brand new iPhone 5 on October 9 in New Zealand, reports TechDay. The sources that are aware of Apple’s product launch roadmap claims that fifth generation iPhone 5 could hit the streets on October 9, 2011 – in New Zealand.Still the October 9th Launch date seems unrealistic as it falls on Sunday. Apple has historically had every iPhone release on a Thursday or Friday evening. Last year, iPhone 4 was launched on July 30th in New Zealand (i.e. on Friday). But the Sunday launch cannot be denied completely.

I'm not going to rant on about Android. But I will say this. Their phones preform like Crap compared to iOS. Android has and most likely always will have, a slow UI with a ton of lag when playing certain games. iOS is on top for a reason. Not just because "it's Apple"
