Or do you have to drop before anything can be done ??

No. Dude it basically temporarily deletes your button layout(so you can't do anything). Without the other codes, you'd just be a sitting duck. Luckily, you have the other codes; which technically puts you into spectator mode. (hence the reason why the buttons are so close to spectator mode.)
