The Second Cold War is a war that takes place in 2025 during the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. A war which occurs after the events of World War III, which occured fictionally around the time of 2017 throughout the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The Combatants of the Second World War are the United States of America, The Peoples Republic of China, and Soviet Russia. The threat is of nuclear weapons.
Ficitionally, it is set in Western America, in Los Angeles.

The Cold War was a conflict spanning from after the end of the Second World War in 1947, to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II are the only Call of Duty games to take place during this period so far.

World War III (abbreviated WWIII or WW3, also referred to as Third World War) was a fictional conflict between Ultranationalist Russia and NATO countries including the United States of America, United Kingdom, France and Germany. This conflict began when Russian forces invaded the United States, in response to the Massacre at Zakhaev International Airport. The United States was initially caught off guard by the attack, but were able to hold several key positions. The initial invasion is the basis for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, whilst the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 revolve around the international conflict sparked by the Russian invasion of Western Europe and the battles that occur in New York, London, Paris, and Berlin.
