Earforce Tango - Review

I was recently gifted, from myself, a pair of Turtle Beaches. More specifically, they were the crème de la crème of the Turtle Beach lineup: Turtle Beach Earforce Tango’s. Actually I just bought them for myself. A mixture of alcohol and increased impulse left me with $300 less than I previously possessed. As soon as I got home, I unboxed these bad boys and fired them up. I’ve never owned a legitimate pair of gaming headsets so naturally I was stoked. Now, you might be asking why I’m putting this here in the news section? Well that’s because I’m going to be doing a review of them. I will break this down into three categories: Performance, Comfort, and Practicality.

Performance - At first, I was very impressed. I was actually caught off guard by the abilities of this headset. I put them on full blast – bad move – and hopped into a lobby in Black Ops 2. Oh my, was I in for a surprise! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The noises that were boosted by this headset almost scared me. Things from the sound of the oceans water flowing to crickets chirping away in the near distance were all in my ear. The noise cancellation is excellent. Once you’re plugged in, you can’t hear anything going on around you besides the game noise it self. My main reasons for getting these were so that I could sound-whore. I shamefully admit it. But with the way Black Ops 2 is setup, it’s very hard to tweak the settings properly to massively enhance only footsteps and so on. This headset comes pre-programmed with 8 different presets made especially for Black Ops 2. You can also customize your own settings through the Turtle Beach website – something I haven’t attempted yet.

Comfort - As far as comfort goes, this does ok. On paper, it’s made to seem real comfy, but in actuality they get a bit annoying and heavy after prolonged periods of gaming. After around three hours of using these and taking them off, a feeling of relief overwhelmed me. It’s a feeling similar to taking off your socks after a long day of work. These headsets are made with memory foam and they actually are comfortable. It’s just that after sometime, they weigh you down. Or at least that’s how I felt. The earmuffs have real soft padding and that adds to the noise cancellation. You can sense the reduction of outside noise as soon as you put these things on. Overall, they are comfortable; however, if you plan on gaming for a long period of time, these aren’t recommended.

Practicality - The Earforce Tango’s are indeed very practical. I was contemplating whether or not to get these or the PX5’s. It was a minor price difference but the Tango’s are rechargeable via USB whereas the PX5’s require AA batteries. That was what made up my mind. Batteries are expensive. Being as clumsy as I am, I knew getting rechargeable batteries won’t be an option. I’ve had them in the past. I said, “had” because I always lose them and more than half the time they aren’t charged and ready when I need them. If you have better morals and standards than I do, then you might be able to keep a pair; however, I always misplace them. The battery life is pretty good and it lasts for around 5-6 hours. Quiet possibly a bit more but they are very good in terms of duration. Oh, and they are wireless so you don’t have to worry about a mess of chords tangling up. Needless to say, I’ve got enough of that going on as it is. This pair of Tango’s is a good and practical choice if you’re serious gamer.

Conclusion - With all of that being said, I would not recommend you buy them. They are simply too expensive. Unless your status quo is MLG, you don’t need these. I bought these with hopes of improving my Call of Duty game, but my hopes were crushed. I saw no improvement in my gaming with these versus not using them. In fact, I do better when I have my iPod plugged into my stereo with the game on mute. Ultimately, for me, these are obsolete. I had higher expectations and somehow thought these would work like magic and that I would go 50-0 each game. Nope. This headset unquestionably enhanced my gaming experience, but sadly it did not do much to improve it.

Keep in mind that this review was based solely off of my personal opinion and bias’s. If you’d like to see the detailed specifications and everything that is included with the headset, you can go here:

This is my view and experience of the headset. I hope you guys enjoyed my first proper article, as it’s been long overdue.

I'm getting the Sierra's at some point, just waiting for Activision to bloody send them!!

Only turtlebeaches I previously had were the px21 lol and Turtlebeach as often been seen as the lowest quality out of the main competitors, but I've heard this year they stepped their game up.

The Low Key OG
still the same OG, but I've been low key
I've got the xp500's which are practically the same thing in green. I just wish they were rechargeable, man I hate AA's.

Cake is a lie
If you only tested them on Black Ops 2 then pretty much any headset would be worthless.

Test them on previous COD games like MW2 or Black Ops 1.

Nothing wrong with that. Just saying Black Ops 2 is near impossible to sound whore consistently.

Yup. Even through turning down music, etc. and boosting the noises, it's sort of hard to single out footsteps only. I hear everything else including footsteps together so it's hard to pay attention to them alone.

FWIW I know the PX5's have a footstep preset that turns everything else but footsteps way down.

I would have got Tritton Warheads if I was on Xbox. Or Astros for PS3 for that price tag.
My friend billy has the tangos, my friend jeff has the warheads, and my brother has Astros, I have Tritton ax720s version 1.5. The only person billy has a better headset than is me but his costs 150 more bucks than mine. Everyone else blow his out of the water.
