In this interview with MCV » Treyarch's community manager, Josh Olin, answers whether Treyarch can succeed Modern Warfare 2 and why they chose the Cold War era.

Will Black Ops be more successful than Modern Warfare 2? Treyarch believe that this is the best game that they have created and as with every Call of Duty game, the bar will be raised.

We’re always trying to make the best game we can possibly make, and Black Ops really is the best title Treyarch has ever created. Modern Warfare 2 was an extremely successful entertainment launch, and yeah it ratcheted the bar up for us. But every Call of Duty has done the same for the ones that follow it, so we’re just ratcheting up that bar one step further.

It motivates us to do better work, and our focus has always been on doing the best work we can, as well as pleasing the fans. It’s a huge game. It’s got an epic, deep single-player campaign, an awesome dedicated co-operative mode and an extremely deep and rich multiplayer mode. ~ Josh Olin

Treyarch are known for sticking to the World War genre for Call of Duty games but the Cold War era is the first time that they've decided to venture out from the old, to something new. Very few games have been based in the Cold War setting but very few people also know about the secret real-life covert black operations that happened behind the scenes during the era.

The Cold War is something that hasn’t really been done in the Call of Duty series – or games in general for that matter.

A lot of people have this misconception about the Cold War being just that: a cold war. They believe there was no conflict. But while we were researching this, we began to learn about these deniable operations that black ops teams would go on all around the world.

We discovered these stories of key missions that struck us as fascinating gameplay possibilities, and Call of Duty: Black Ops will really capture that really awesome, intense black operations spirit of the Cold War. ~ Josh Olin

Josh Olin then went on to describe how the Single Player missions can be played in different ways. You can either play stealth or action in parts of the missions (you decide!) while if you set an alarm off, then get ready for an explosive battle.

And to anyone worried that Activision and Treyarch will be following EA's and THQ's footsteps by charging people who purchase pre-owned copies extra to play online - don't worry! Although Olin finds the technique "intriguing", he confirms that this will not happen with Black Ops.
