Black Ops: Perks Hints, Tips and Pro Challenges
Perks are an integral part of the Co

Black Ops experience, knowing about them, thinking about what combinations to use and what to spend your time going pro on is vital to your success. You have three tiers of perks which you can use. This post intends to assist you in both choosing a perk and help in getting the pro versions. If anyone has additional hints, tips or pieces of information that should go in here please let me know. Also feedback on the layout of this post would be appreciated as it is a lot of information to put in one place.
Tier 1
Lightweight
• Standard – Move faster than usual
• Pro – No falling damage
This is a great perk for beginners or people with slower reactions. It helps you get away faster when you’re being shot and gives you a slight edge over those people who don’t have it.
Pro Challenges
• Escape Death 5 times after being shot – Use your corners and cover, learn how to dolphin dive and go prone quickly. A suggestion is using tactical layout when trying to get this. But 5 times is not many and you will probably get this through normal game play
• Get 15 melee kills – Equipping the ballistic knife speeds up your melee time and looks awesome, but again this is not very challenging
• Get 10 offense medals by killing enemies near their objective – You will need to play offensively in an objective game. If you play capture the flag then this is easy. Grab the flag and then any close range kills that you get are offense kills.
Scavenger
• Standard – Resupply from dead bodies
• Pro – Extra Magazines, resupply tactical grenades
If you find yourself running out of bullets then this is the perk for you. Does this refill RPG??
Pro Challenges
• Get 5 kills without dying 5 times– Kill people
• Get 5 lethal grenade kills with resupplied grenades – Throw away your grenades as soon as you spawn, resupply and wait for an opportunity
• Resupply 150 times with scavenger – The biggest tip here is not to run straight to the dead body, maintain your normal awareness. You just shot someone and appeared on a radar, chances are they also shot and appeared on a radar and they will be coming for you
Ghost
• Standard – undetectable to Spy Planes
• Pro – invisible to aircraft and turrets, no red crosshair or name when targeted
I usually keep this perk to throw on when you are getting raped by air support. The no red crosshair is useful when you are sniping from low cover. If you are prone people can mistake you for a dead body.
Pro Challenges
• Kill 20 enemies while they have a spy plane or blackbird active – It’s not like they have a big neon sign above their head so this is pure luck, though people with a spy plane active are usually less aware so having ghost on assists in murdering their sorry arses
• Destroy 30 aircraft with any non-killstreak launcher – The Strela is the best launcher for this but you don’t unlock it until level 30. Don’t forget that you can shoot down spy planes. What is the other launcher?
• Destroy 1 sentry gun – Not everyone has a sentry gun, so set it up as your killstreak reward, when you get it let someone else take it and destroy their sentry gun. Stuns disable these still so throw a stun grenade and run up behind it and knife it. Trying to shoot it takes too long and will get you killed
Hardline
• Standard – Gain killstreak rewards with one less kill than normal
• Pro – Re-roll the result of a care package
Watch yourself when changing classes in between rounds. This can mess with your kill counts during a game. From reported experience on this forum (Wolfram), rerolling the SAM turret results in low end killstreak rewards, sentry gun is medium results and care package rerolls get decent ones.
Pro Challenges
• Earn 7 killstreak rewards in one game - Run the low end ones
• Get a 7 killstreak – be good enough to kill 7 people without dying
• Share 10 care packages with team mates – Get a mic and yell your arse off. From my experience people seem to be deaf when playing so be clear and concise. “Take my package”, “Take my package”, “Take my package” – It means something entirely different when Buckshot says it though
Flak Jacket
• Standard – Enhances your resistance to explosives
• Pro – Immunity to fire damage, reset grenade timer on throwback
This perk is useful if you play a game type where there are loads of explosives going off all of the time like Groundwar where every second person has a china lake or RPG. The pro is handy for napalm strike resistance but hardly anyone uses a flamethrower.
Pro challenges
• Plant/Defuse 10 bombs in demolition – play FTW and you will get this
• Survive 10 explosives – Put on hacker as well and instead of blowing up a claymore, run past it. Not too close as you will die sometimes. But most of the time you will survive it
• Throw back 5 enemy grenades – Seriously, this is hard to do because everyone cooks them. It is so long in between seeing that “Press RB to throw back” that I had trouble remembering to throw it back rather than run away
Tier 2
Hardened
• Standard – increases the penetration of your bullets
• Pro – Increased damage to turrets and aircraft. Reduces flinch when hit
This is more like the FMJ than like stopping power. It increases damage a little but is more useful for shooting through walls. You would need to unload every bullet you have into most aircraft so don’t waste your time.
Pro Challenges
• Get 10 kills through walls - On firing range you can shoot through most of the walls. It is worthwhile sometimes having a punt at the camping spots or where you think people are and if you get a hitmarker….unleash hell.
• Destroy 1 piece of enemy equipment through walls - Put on Hacker and this one is easy
• Shoot 200 bullets into enemy aircraft - Expect to die when you unload every bullet you have into aircraft for absolutely no result except this objective
Scout
• Standard - Allows you to hold your breath for longer than normal
• Pro - Switch weapons faster
A perk specifically designed for snipers, and the only advantage that snipers get in this game.
Pro Challenges
• Get 50 kills with secondary weapons – I recommend either akimbo pythons or picking up someone else’s primary weapon. Switch to your secondary and hold X to pick theirs up
• Get 50 One Shot, One Kill medals – It’s a grind
• Get 30 headshot kills – If you are no good and getting regular headshots with your sniper rifle (like me), pick up someone else’s AR. When you shoot them, spray upwards, just one of your bullets needs to hit their head to get a headshot so you don’t need to spend a lot of time aiming or trying to sneak up behind people
Steady Aim
• Standard – Increases your hip fire accuracy
• Pro – Faster weapons raise after sprinting, faster knife recovery
Essential if you use akimbo anything. The recovery time on the ballistic knife melee does not seem any different, but normal knifing does have a faster recovery. So if you get into a lot of close range battles then the Pro is good.
• Get 150 hip-fire kills - Akimbo SMG’s and Python as secondary are the easiest way to get this. Every kill is a hip fire kill
• Melee 2 enemies in fewer than 5 seconds - Equip and use the ballistic knife as this speeds up your melee time. You are also unlikely to come across two enemies in FFA so play one of the team matches
• 100 kills after sprinting – Run, shoot…it’s not that hard
Sleight of Hand
• Standard - Reload faster than normal
• Pro - Aim down sights faster with non-scoped weapons
If speed and reaction time is everything to your style of play then this is the perk for you. Sleight of Hand with dual mag is amazingly fast.
Pro Challenges
• Get 150 kills while ADS – Aim and shoot
• Reload and finish off the enemy you wounded 10 times (shoot, reload, kill X10) – It seems that people have a hard time telling where you are if you shoot them from the side, or they don’t pay attention. So fire a couple of shots, reload and finish them off
• Kill an enemy within 5 seconds of reloading 30 times - If you are running behind someone, reload and shoot. Other than that it will happen naturally.
Warlord
• Standard - Additional primary weapon attachments
• Pro - Allows you to start with additional lethal/tactical grenades
A perk for those people of want more of their attachments. So suppressor and dual mag. You can’t have grenade launcher and anything else though, so noob toobing in this game is almost nonexistent.
Pro Challenges
• Get 25 frag or semtex kills – Can everyone please do this so I can throw them back?
• Get 1 multi-kills with grenades – This won’t happen easily on FFA so play a team based match
• Get 150 kills using guns with two attachments – OMG 150 kills?? Easy
Tier 3
Hacker
• Standard - allows you to detect enemy equipment and explosives
• Pro - Sabotage enemy equipment, turrets and crates; makes you invisible to motion sensors
Sabotaging enemy equipment is some of the best fun you will have. You can take their crate and leave a booby trap. Be careful but make their claymore your own.
Pro Challenges
• Destroy 10 equipment or explosives using hacker – If you also put on hardened then you can shoot them through walls. It doesn’t count claymores which you blow up without shooting. So if it senses you and you survive the explosion, that is not a destroy.
• Kill an enemy with claymores or c4 25 times - Place claymores on a slight angle into the room. It is an almost guaranteed kill if you put on in the little cave you have to duck to go into when going through the crate in Firing Range. Another hint is that if you play Domination and plant C4 at one of your flags it does not matter where you are on the map, when you hear that the enemy is at B (etc) blow them up.
• Kill 25 enemies within jammer or motion sensor radius - Use the motion sensor; it is easier to get the kills than the jammer. The jammer is useful for annoying ppl but not finding and killing them
Marathon
• Standard - Allows you to sprint longer than normal
• Pro - Unlimited Sprint

Pro Challenges
• Sprint 26 miles using Marathon - To complete the pro challenges you need to capture the flag 15 times. Running to get the flag then running to cap the flag will get you there
• Get the First Blood Medal 10 times - This happens naturally. I have noticed that most people go left when they spawn so I go right to get this. You end up face to face and even if you only win 50/50 of the 1v1 battles you will get this.
• In Capture the Flag, get the Flag Capture Medal 15 times while using Marathon - You don’t need to fire a bullet. On the big maps running around the edges works for me.
Ninja
• Standard – Silent footsteps
• Pro – Enemy footsteps are louder
This was useless but now sound is fixed (better?) then louder footsteps are very useful. Get a headset.
Pro Challenges
• Get 15 backstabber medals – Sneaky sneaky
• Plant the bomb in search and destroy 10 times – Play SnD
• Get 150 kills using the suppressor attachment – Attach a suppressor, but read this forum to see which weapons this is an advantage and which aren’t
Second Chance
• Standard - Pull out your pistol before dying so you can get some revenge before you kick the bucket
• Pro - Longer down time; any friendly can revive you

Pro Challenges
• Get 1 headshot kills in second chance – gay
• Get 10 kills in second chance – gay
• In second chance, kill the guy who downed you 5 times – gay
Tactical Mask
• Standard - Protects you against Nova Gas
• Pro - Resist flash/concussion grenades; reveal position of flashed/stunned enemies
Nova gas is making a comeback so the standard version is getting useful. I like the pro version of this.
Pro challenges
• Kill 20 enemies that are stunned by your concussion grenade – Scavenger pro helps here because you can resupply tactical. It has to be pro though
• Kill 20 flashbanged enemies by your flashbang - Scavenger pro helps here because you can resupply tactical. It has to be pro though
• Kill 20 enemies poisoned by your nova gas - Throw your nova, wait a couple of seconds. If you see a hit marker remember you can run through the gas as you have your mask on.
