He means, pick a game mode and the second you do so back out and pick free for all and you'll both get in. I tried this and i couldn't do it, this was the method i used on cod4 and 5 and 6. On BO I just simply lock the FFA lobby then invite all my friends then unlock it.

Maybe he just joined your session?

this works on COD4 wouldn't be surprised if this works on black ops.
