My method is run around the map get a few kills and when I get my spy plane call it in take advantage of it and pick off a few people until a get my chopper gunner then move again because they might come back for me then I get 2 more kills while running around to get my dogs.

I do the same exact thing as you except i always die one before dogs.

Just play smart, and use killstreaks that help you build your killstreak, like uav and blackbird. Unless you get in a lobby full of split-screens, then just go Rambo on them

Know how to use your HUD to determine where enemies have to be and it'll help you against Ghost users as well.

Listen to game sounds. If you hear the hiss of a suppressor an a green/blue arrow disappears near you; be alert.

Don't shoot at an enemy unless you have a good angle.

Shoot from behind cover.

Switch classes if need be. Use the right perks depending on what happens.

DON'T CAMP WHERE TEAMMATES ARE. You'll both die.

No when to be aggressive vs defensive. Camping in corners or Rushing with no awareness won't get you shit but Spy Planes or GayC Cars. The better your team and/or weaker your enemies are should determine how aggressive to be.
