Then why do a lot of the threads say that 1/2 the party will have to back out and rejoin the session?

Easier I guess, as 6 will already be in the lobby? Not sure.

Maybe it's just so you can sort of establish pairs or team a/b before the game creates teams if everyone doesn't have OMA for S& riot boosting.

by lobby i assume you mean party?

Not more then 6 persons can be in the party to join SD, so 6 have to leave and join.
