I have a 120 GB slim PS3 on 3.50 firmware, and my friend has a PS3 on 3.41 firmware (he doesn't have online), and he has a TI-84 calculator for school.
I want to know, what physical cables do we need? I know we need an ethernet cable to transfer the patch, but that's all I know of.
Secondly, once we get the modded patch transferred to from his PS3 to mine, can I take it back home and play it online with the modded patch still? or can I only host at his house?

Yes, if you data transfer over it will have the patch on there to play online.
You don't need anything other than cable that came with TI 84.
Remember also though when you data transfer his to yours, it will delete all your stuff and put all his stuff on yours..Data transfer makes a 100% copy of the PS3
