you didnt search this before hand obviously, but in order to do it you need to start a private match then go to the host menu and click 'big xp', 'force host', 'ranked match', and end game

now you will be in the public lobby, i find it never matches you with a game when you first get out of a private match so i just cancel press cancel to stop matchmaking, and then i go pick the game type i want, then wait and see if i am host, if not i go back to lobby and try again
