What does it do?

Open is good. I suggest you don't touch your connections with your PS3 to ensure it stays. Open means your connection is at it's best (Nat Type 2 is open). You can connect easily with others, and join ranked games easy too. The one below Open is Moderate, which is where I'm at. You still have good connection(Nat Type 2), but you don't join games as fast for ranked and friend invites. The last one is Strict. This ones bad. It's Nat Type 3, and you have really bad connection and it takes a while to join games with friends or ranked.
