Once you join you can stay as long as you want and have a game with other players (if there are any on) then you can leave and host your own private match.

This can not be used in ranked matches, as soon as you go to 'FIND MATCH' the game will restore itself to normal, but you are welcome to rejoin at any time and as many times as you want until my Xbox crashes or get disconnected from the internet.
