on MW3 they ban you by console serial number, like on black ops, but i think it differs with perma bans and temp bans. No one gets banned on MW2,

It's impossible to "ban through your HDD" - because a full system format would remove the ban.

A "console" ban is just that, meaning your UNIQUE PS3 ID is logged and banned. It can only be changed through a few programs that were floating around before the whole Sony Hack thing. You had to have the ID of another unbanned PS3 to do this. These programs were also used to get free things from the PS store and other stuff. Can't remember the names of them. Most bans on MW3 are 2 day bans and they are just banning your PSN name and resetting your stats. They will however console ban for repeat offenses according to R. Bowling.
