It works, just have your partner down themselves by the box, wait a sec, revive, then quickly press SQUARE before you finish reviving him when the trade weapon message pops up. Unfortunately, if you use the Pack a Punch machine, you'll lose a weapon when trading it in...

that sucks that you cant do pack a punch that helps out so much...=)
