The actual phone should be able to, as long as you get a sim card from whatever company is out there (usually prepaid). I personally didn't use an American phone when I was out there, however I do have random cell phones from Japan, Singapore, and Dubai. All of them are able to be used in the states with an American sim card (for me AT&T). Whatever you do DO NOT try to use your regular phone line (American sim) overseas! If by chance it does work in your area ypu WILL have the largest phone bill of your life...happened to me a few years back...

Chi-town
If you unlock it and put a prepaid SIM in it will work.
