Try downloading VLC media player, you can find a download from google and it should play almost all formats.

I'm pretty sure VLC media player will play them! And it's open source! (free) =D

I recommend VLC. It's free and plays all video files that I know of.
(I recently watched Karate Kid.mkv with VLC and it's great)
