Post: New HDD, need a case?
09-20-2011, 07:51 AM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Okay I had an old ps3 HDD laying around (80GB, 2.5", ATA)
And I got an old computer for free with only 40GB HDD in it.
so I had a sata cable from the days when we did HDD mods for mw2 lobbies (thanks hunter)

so I installed the HDD, and plugged in power etc. I set up drivers and have it working on my desktop.

The only problem is that I have no case for it
It's just hanging next to my other HDD in my desktop.
So do I need a case?
Will it cause heat issues?
Its not touching anything but can a circut get messed up?

thanks I would love to know, plz.

You really should either mount it in the case, or get an external enclosure, but honestly it doesn't matter. I have a few all ide drives that I use through the usb that sit outside my pc case and they are just fine

you can't mount a 2.5" inch laptop HDD in a desktop. the space is for like a 8 inch lol.

but I just placed it in the "case" spot so it's safe and won't drop. and it's right buy the fan so it won't overheat.

this is a pretty BAMF computer I made from scratch Smile

Actually you can, we've done modifications in the past and ended up using the 3.5 inch bays in the front for laptop drives. Which really doesn't take much work at all

well like, its plastic.

and the bays are definately not 3.5" its hard to explain. its like a 10 year old desktop with 500GB + 160GB, 3.8Ghz Processor, and 4GB of ram Smile

Let me answer this for you in simple form -

Let me just get this straight, you have a HDD Spinning when it's "hanging" .. Can cause earlier dismounts of the HDD Head, Reading problems, and even possibly a Damaged Platter(s)

In this world i think this answer is screaming ..

Yes - Even if the drive is just dangling there it still can get extreme heat because of the on-board components heating into it. HDD's are suppose to be mounted, possibly in a are-rich place, or near a fan.

This is possible if you move the computer, and it can hit the sides and possibly cause damage the HDD Head/Platters (or Both), and can cause damage to the Head Control.
