RIP PICHU.
I prefer using Snagit10. Records, + picture and comes with its own editor. 40 dollars but you can find serial pretty much anywhere.

I'd recommend it.

Does it actually record the screen, like a video?

I use Camtasia Studio. Its fairly easy to use, you get a nice editor specifically made for it, and there's plenty of features. Plus you can record your screen and voice at the same time, you can save it to a variety of file types (including GIFs if you were so inclined) and I find the quality is pretty nice. Downside: its expensive.

Got Camtasia 7.1 last night and found a serial for it. It looks pretty good and it's simple to use.
