(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey guys I want to revive an old Toshiba, that I haven't used in a few years. I just restored the system because it was being stupid... So I want to install Linux OS on it.
specs are it has 55GB HDD and has 1.4 GHz processor. So what do you guys think the best choice is? Also what would be the point of making it a server? I've read something before that mentioned it and I think my friend uses old laptops, puts on linux and makes them torrenting servers or something. Also if someone could give me an ok tutorial for installing whatever you think is the best choice, I'll be eternally greatful and I'll use some of my epic +rep and give you some vBux. Smile

Thanks

Do a barrel roll!
personally i use ubuntu, and theres many uses for a server. i host my own website from my home server, and whenever i need to send someone files in the GBs, i just send it to my server over my home network, and they can download it overnight (much easier if you have a domain). i havnt really used linux much, so i cant really help with software, although one thing i can say having used it, web browsing is so much faster than even a fresh install of windows. and (at least with ubuntu), theres a directory of all types of different software. installing linux is very easy, you can download an ISO file here:

just burn it to a dvd, and boot from it, then follow the instructions

hope this helps a little, sorry i cant give much of an in-depth tutorial, its kinda 1 AM here Winky Winky PM me if you have any trouble or any other questions.

I have tryed ubuntu, kubuntu, openSUSE and Slackware. If this is the first time you use Linux try Ubuntu. It's easy to use and if you ask me it's better then windows. Slackware is maybe even better but it's probably the hardest to use distro there is.

There is a little program for selecting which Linux os is best for you:

I'd probably try OpenSUSE. It probably has the most Windows like "out-of-the-box" feel, but is very easy to use, and highly customizable. I use it on my old Compaq that I just recently restored and I love it!

agreed go with kubuntu it is a kde based frontend and will look similar to windows, although i do not like this i prefer ubuntu (gnome frontend)which is similar to the feel of a mac. Ubuntu have also tryed their hardest to make it user-friendly and beginner-friendly. Also it is based of debian which i prefer so much more over the others.
