Post: Building a desktop, Help Required.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); So guys I'm looking at building a desktop because my laptop is gradually dying on me and I need a replacement and don't feel like forking out £1200 for a gaming laptop when I could get a desktop that is much better for the same price.

For a start I'm English and won't be able to use newegg to buy parts so have been looking through websites like scan and ebuyer etc. basically the UK equivalents to newegg, So any help is appreciated even in the form of recommending other sites but I'll start here by saying what I want:

My budget is anywhere from £1000- £1200 or below that the pc's uses would vary but I'd like to be able to play most games like skyrim fallout 3 etc. on high settings with out lag also I don't play FPS games much but I'd also like it to be able to play them to if I so choose to.

The other main use for this computer will be multimedia playback so I'll be watching lots of films and anime on it all in high definition most of which plays okay on my laptop now but some of the 1080p films have a tendency to lag which I don't want obviously.

Anyway now for the individual components:

Monitor: Personally I'd like to have 3 monitors resolution 1920x1080 is preferable but also considering 1920x1200 but am not really sure which is more beneficial. the colour display needs to be atleast 8 bit would like 10-bit but that would cripple me paying for a monitors like that. Also HDMI connections between or is there a better alternative?

Hard Drive: lots of storage space because the main use for this computer will be watching films and I'll need space to store the releases. For the most part had a good experience with WD hard drives so possibly one or two terrabyte HD inside the PC.

Motherboard: No clue here help needed guys

Ram: Need enough to be able to do most tasks without putting a strain on the pc 4-8GB?

CPU: again pretty cluless here input needed

GPU: well something that can play most games also AMD vs Nvida which isn't going to burn my house down.

Case preferable something smart I'll look into this myself so don't worry about this too much.

mouse keyboard etc I'll sort something out.

Now this is where my list ends I'm really only concerned with the core components so recommendations for those are most welcomed also thanks in advance guys and please point out anything I've missed and will a sound card be necessary I'll be using a pair of AKG K 701's with a Fiio E10 DAC/amp with this desktop so go sound quality is important.

Another point, would it be worth using an SSD for core programs for a fast bootup?

Uhh, I'll see what I can do with the 3 monitors.

What size are you looking at?

You can swap out the GPU for something like a 6970, but you need to go AMD for 3 monitors.

I'm not too sure about great monitors, so I would leave it up to someone else. But I'll take a look.

Cheers I looked through each of the parts and they appear to be good for a grahpics card I'm conisdering buying an AMD radeon HD 7850 shortly after it's releasd in march, moniters I'm not really sure what to get so I'm just going to go up pc world and look around and see what's avalible. For the HDD you suggested I noticed it's rather expensive and also seems to be an energy saving one I migh wait a whil for the price to go down.

Also a question how do you check to see if a motherboard is compatable with the other components your going to use for the pc?

Also another point I should note is this pc is going to be used predominantly for hd playback not gaming, gaming is merely an extra with that in mind should I chage parts or if I build it for gaming will it be as good at playing films as it is at gaming etc.

Alright then you might wan't to stick to the 7850 because the one I listed was for gaming...woops.

That 2tb HDD is the cheapest I found for it's size. You could buy a higher performance one that has 1tb for around the same price.

The motherboard, well simple.

The socket is 1155, the same as the i5 2500k. So that will work.

The motherboard has enough slots and supports the memory clock of the RAM that I suggested so that will also work.

The motherboard has 1 PCIE x 16 slot which means that any GPU really will fit, as long as the case is large enough.

The peripherals, such as a keyboard, mouse, CD drive etc. work really with any motherboard. The connectors that are supplied with the motherboard would just plug straight into the CD drive and there is also a power connector.

Check the specifications of each component and match them with the specs of the motherboard.

NOTE:

Do you wan't a Motherboard that has 2 graphic's cards slots or not? I ask this because there is a really good one here:
