Short answer you can't. Windows 7 uses a new setup, any version before Vista cannot be updated. W7 will do a clean install of XP, removing all stored programs and files. If you wish to get W7, backup your files under XP, install 7 and then copy the backup files to their new folders.

Burn windows 7 to a disk then reformat

Yeah just use the setup and it will install (I previously had win7). After the installation go to local disk and inside should be a folder that says old windows, which is ur old stuff....
