(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); So my Vista laptop has finally bit the dust, and wont even turn on past the initial windows screen (whether in safe mode, or system recovery or any option from holding f8 or anything).
I heard I can transfer the data from the hdd (assuming it is still intact) to my other computer, which I could really do with doing as it has music and videos on as well photos...

I don't really know anything about computers, but have been told that i need to use a USB adaptor to get it off... can someone point me in the right direction of what i'm looking for please? I am assuming it is a SATA (if not, how do I check...:embarrassedSmile

I looked through a few quick searches, and found a few things... But is something like this : You must login or register to view this content. or this You must login or register to view this content. what I need? Or do I need something totally different...

Thanks to any help.

If your new computer is a desktop you can plug it in using a sata cable and a sata power cable. If you have a new laptop I would suggest getting something like the second thing. The first thing would not work as most laptops use proprietary stata connects which you need to buy another set off from the manufacture which can get a little pricy. Hope this help Smile

The easiest way to do this is to take out the hard drive from the laptop, plug it into a desktop and see if it reads it. If it reads it however it says that it needs to format it in order to work, do not format it (obviously). Rather, download a Linux ISO and install it to a USB using this tool here: You must login or register to view this content.

After you have done that, boot into Linux and search for your hard drive that you recovered from your laptop. You should be able to access the data there. Here you can transfer all the files that you need to your hard drive and then possibly format the drive if you want to be able to use it as extra storage.

If however, you do not have a desktop with SATA connectors, you should use the second cable and plug it in via USB, then try to recover your data that way.

If you have another desktop you could use just remove the cover and find the disc drive and you will see 2 leads which connect to the drive that's your sata data and sata power just unplug them and connect them to your drive then reboot and go to my computer you should see the other drive. Now just drag out what you want. If this is not possible then just buy a sata caddy and plug your drive in and connect to a pc or laptop and get the files that way.
