Farm engrams they occasionally convert to motes. Do bounties, farm chests, do stuff that gives XP.

Your inventory is tracked on the server so adding to it with a mod would only be visual since it would not match what is on the server. Did you not notice the lag whenever your inventory changes? Sometimes it is good to think for yourself rather than believing something just because you heard it.
