In a recent conference call with investors, Activision Blizzard revealed a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works, and hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.

According to Ars Technica, Call of Duty 7 will renew Activision Blizzard's annual assault on holiday sales charts in 2010. This isn't a huge surprise - the company has released a new Call of Duty game every single year for the past five years. However, they've never released a Call of Duty with a subscription plan, and that may change soon. During the conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, "If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise."

That's right, Activision Blizzard is pondering a Calling Plan of Duty, though you probably won't see one in this year's game. That's because it's in development at traditionally conservative Treyarch Studios, not Infinity Ward, which made last year's best-selling game. Furthermore, Destructoid quotes a source which claims that Infinity Ward is hard at work on a Call of Duty massively-multiplayer online game, which certainly fits the profile of a subscription-based title.

In other news, Kotick confirmed that Activision Blizzard would scale down their musical game production in light of the genre's flagging sales. While the company plans to release new DJ Hero and Guitar Hero games this year, they won't couple them with expensive plastic instruments to the same extent that they did in the past. Instead, they'll likely release discs full of new tracks aimed at people whom already own a menagerie of musical machines.

But don't think Activision Blizzard is scaling back all their efforts. In another recent call, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime confirmed that StarCraft II is due in the middle of this year, and that the third expansion to World of Warcraft, dubbed 'Cataclysm,' is due before the year ends. Between those two titles and a new Call of Duty, Activision Blizzard is set for a monstrous 2010.

I would never play a game that you have to pay subs. I pay my 40 quid an expect to get everything for that 40 quid. If they think I'm paying more Activision can suck my balls.

they make enough profit on the game at £40 now they expect us to subscribe lol i wont be doing it, they should take a leaf out of sony's book look at MAG great game (my opinion) no sub fees, call of duty wouldnt be as big if you have to pay fees to play it, look at final fantasy XI big game would of been massive if you didnt have to pay fees

Daddy's home.
Activi$ion...says it all really. They just want money, more money and yep, more money. Activi$ion know how to ruin a good game. Release them every year, or every few months. Tony Hawks got released every year, and now thats almost dead. Guitar hero, they released like what, 7 last year? CoD, every year. They do the same thing and ruin perfectly good games. CoD will surely die after this next one.

yea m8 basicly, im a BIG final fantasy fan and refused to buy XI due to it being a subscription only game, it cost approx £10 a month to subscribe if i remember right, so by my maths game aprrox £40 sub fees for a year £120 total game cost for a year £160!!! is ANY game worth that much? ps only estimating what the sub fees would be but guessing around that figure could be less could even be more
