What are kidney stones: Kidney stones, usually comprised of a compound called calcium oxalate, are the result of a build-up of dissolved minerals on the inner lining of the kidneys. These deposits can grow to the size of a golf ball while maintaining a sharp, crystalline structure. They may be small and pass unnoticed out of the urinary tract, but they may also cause extreme pain upon exiting. Kidney stones that remain inside the body can lead to many conditions, including severe pain and ureter (the tube connecting the kidney and bladder) blockage that obstructs the path urine uses to leave the body.

What causes kidney stones: The leading cause of kidney stones is a lack of water. Stones commonly have been found in those that drink less than the recommended eight to ten glasses of water a day. When there is not enough water to dilute the uric acid (component of urine), the pH level within the kidneys drops and becomes more acidic. An excessively acidic environment in the kidneys is conducive to the formation of kidney stones.

Who usually gets kidney stone: Stones are common but your sex, age, diet, climate, and genetic makeup will determine your chance of getting a stone during your life. Some studies suggest that over a lifetime one in ten men and one in twenty women will develop a stone. Once you have experienced a kidney stone you have an increased chance of developing another one. (My grandfather got them....)

Advice upon getting a kidney stone: Drink drink drink (water!)
You can half your risk of getting a second stone by simply drinking more than 2 litres of fluid per day, including drinking at night.
Eat a healthy diet with calcium but avoid calcium supplements. A diet which is low in calcium seems to make stones more likely.Avoid excessive quantities of salt in the diet .
In general eat more vegetables, vegetable proteins tend to make the urine less acid.
Particular stones like oxalate may need you to reduce the amount of oxalate in the diet. Chocolate, nuts, rhubarb, strawberries, spinach, coffee and tea are all high in oxalate.
*I believe my stone was caused by to much calcium because i was drinking alot of Oj, Turns out something good for you can back fire.....:p*
Also for all the young ones out there.... Lay of the pop, dont drink it as much this has a good cause for them!
