Bystanders who taunted a teenager moments before he jumped to his death have been branded "despicable" and "mindless".
Coroner: Suicide bystanders 'mindless' As negotiators tried to talk Shaun Dykes, 17, down from the top of a car park, youths below shouted taunts, encouraging him to jump and filming his ordeal on mobile phones, Derby Coroner's Court heard.
Assistant Deputy Coroner for Derby Louise Pinder launched a stinging attack on the teenager's tormentors.
Ms Pinder said: "I am quite sure police officers were taken by surprise by the despicable people taunting Shaun.
"It's inconceivable that, whilst negotiators were talking with Shaun, these mindless people were behaving with such insensitivity and without any apparent concern for a human being's safety.
"The individuals who were taunting Shaun at that time, whose identities remain unknown, are responsible, at least in part, for his death."
Ms Pinder added: "It's a great shame that the police were not able to trace and bring them to court to explain their actions."
The inquest heard that Shaun jumped 60ft from the top floor of the Westfield shopping centre car park in Derby on September 27.
As shoppers gathered below, some taunted Shaun with yells of "Get on with it, jump" and "Stop wasting taxpayers' money", the inquest heard.
Others filmed him leaping to his death on their mobile phones, before posting the clips on YouTube and Facebook, police told the inquest.
A verdict that Shaun took his own life was recorded.
though im against the antagonizes, im more against the fact that they are trying to pin his death on the people taunting, it was his whole choice to jump, he wasn't pushed or made do it. He did in with his own will power.
Some people have such depression they kill themselves, when the mind is under that much stress it goes into a kinda "fũck it all" mode. Shit doesn't work well under that set of circumstances.
