I went into this film with the idea that this flick was going to be as long winded and dumb as Signs, but I was surprised when I came out of the theater.
I'm not going to go as far as saying it's Knights best story yet, but I think it's definitely a great story.
Being PG-13, you don't have much to work with. So you are left with the idea that not much will happen. The film starts with a very disorienting helicopter shot of the city upside down for the intro credits, which makes you feel uneasy. A fitting feeling for the early part of the film.
Going along with Knight's normal story building process, some of the characters are introduced with somewhat detailed backgrounds and others are quickly glanced over. Just when you think the story's going to take a long time to get started, the characters enter the elevator and the fun begins.
Now I imagined that the rest of the film was going to be a silly ghost story involving the characters inside the elevator, but shit quickly proceeds to go down. And I thoroughly enjoyed the way the scenes were placed afterward.
The plot is that one of the people in the elevator is the human incarnation of Satan, which is kind of scary in itself, and leaves you guessing who is who for the rest of the film. Also, there is a sense of a "whodunit" motif during this film, as things start to go badly after the elevator gets stuck.
Interlaced with the scenes of the people in the box, are scenes of people trying to fix the elevator, and shit doesn't work out too well for them either. Along with that, there is a film-wide connecting story that ends with a surprising "twist", much like Knight's other flicks.
All in all I liked this film. Then ending is great, and there are a lot of good scary parts that leave you feeling uneasy throughout the film. I give it a thumbs up. Definitely a go watch movie.
