(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});This wouldn’t be a proper review if I didn’t tell you from the start that Saints Row 2 is NOT GTA IV, nor does it want to be. This game was designed with the words “Crazy action” in mind and not “Fake realism”. You are no longer handicapped by GTA IV’s false sense of realism, the world is yours to explore and yours to destroy.
Story: The storyline of Saints row 2 is not mind blowing, with that being said it still does its job of keeping you entertained and engaged. It’s the typical “You’re a bad guy doing bad stuff for various characters in the game”. But just because it’s slightly generic doesn’t mean it isn’t tons of fun to play. Something Saints Row 2 does that not many other sandbox games have been able to do is it lets you FULLY customize your character. Nearly everything can be altered to YOUR likings, ranging from the way you walk to even your characters voice (3 for each gender). The ability to partly mirror yourself in a video game and wreak havoc in a virtual city is an experience not many games can offer, and it makes the story that much more entertaining.
Graphics: Saints row 2 doesn’t take gaming to another level and there’s nothing jaw dropping in the visuals, It doesn’t have outstanding detail like MGS4 or Uncharted 2 but it isn’t a bad looking game either, it’s exactly what you would expect from a 2008 game. The character models look extremely good from afar, sadly when you get up close and personal you start to see a lot of the flaws…especially in cut scenes. There’s some texture issues through ought the game and during large action sequences you will experience a short fall in the frame rate. With all this being said it doesn’t take away from the Saints Row 2 experience in the slightest bit, 95% of the time you will be too busy blowing cars up to actually notice or care about how the grass looks.
Gameplay: The actual gameplay is where Saints row 2 shines and it would be nearly impossible to list everything without missing out 1 or 2 things.
Vehicles- Saints row 2 offers a variety of vehicles that has not been seen in any other game. You could choose to do a drive-by on other gangs from a pee-wee bike all the way up to an armored vehicle with a built in machine gun. But this would be nothing if your vehicles weren’t fully customizable. And I’m not just talking about the GTA style of customization which lets you paint your car, I’m talking about spikes on your wheels and slicing up pedestrians while driving over a sidewalk type of customization. You also have a large choice of water and air vehicles, and to this day I can’t find anything more enjoyable than flying a plane through a bustling city while trying to avoid crashing into sky scrapers.
Combat- With over 40 unique and fun to use weapons, Saints row 2 offers an extremely deadly arsenal. Laser guided rockets, Miniguns, duel wielded samurai swords, and chainsaws are some of the deadliest weapons in the game and I haven’t even scraped the surface. With no auto-aim or cover system you can toss the whole idea of playing the game strategically out the window, Saints row 2 is all about being aggressive and killing everyone as brutally as you can. You can use enemies and civilians as human shields which can make you semi-invincible. The largest downside of combat is the melee, it feels clunky and the animations looks very awkward, but I can guarantee with all these destructive weapons available to you, you will very rarely use melee.
Verdict: You can call Saints row 2 many things, but GTA clone is not one of them. This game goes far and beyond the GTA series. The graphics aren’t jaw-dropping awesome, the melee feels horrid, and it doesn’t look like a fully polished game but if you’re a gamer who plays games for the quality of gameplay and not for how pleasing it is to the eye Saints row 2 is a must buy.
Saints Row 2 gets an 8.5/10!
This was also my blog app, I thought it was a good review that the rest of NGU deserved to see.
