How did he do to know that the light switch turns walking the path once the hall?

The phrasing of the question makes it difficult to guess the riddle.

Assuming he can only try one switch
And two do not turn on anything.
He could try flipping up the only one that is pointing downward.

If he can open the door and check the light?
he could flip the first switch on for 5 minutes, then turn it off and turn on the second switch. Go and open the door and if the light is on then it is the second switch, If it is off he can check if the bulb is warm, if so it is the first switch.
if the light is off and not warm it isthe 3rd switch.
Not sure what the flashlight is for unless it is to find where the switchs are located.
