Engineer said she just waited for train to hit her
A Manteca woman in her mid-40s was killed by a northbound Union Pacific freight train Thursday night some 250 feet northwest of Yosemite Avenue near Library Park.

The unidentified victim had been experiencing problems in her life, family members informed Manteca Police officers following the 7:16 p.m. fatal accident.

Officers Bryan Holland and Jason Downs were on a police call on nearby Moffatt Boulevard when they heard the 80-car train brake to a stop – coming to a halt short of Walnut Avenue. Trains travel under their 50-mile per hour limit when traveling northbound through downtown Manteca, police said.

The engineer was shaken by the death, telling officers it was the first time he had hit a person on the tracks. The officers commented, however, in how quickly the engineer was able to safely stop his freight train.

Officers also quoted the engineer as saying the woman just walked on the ties between the rails, looking directly at the engine, and not being able to stop the freight in time to avoid hitting her. It appeared she was thrown 75 to 100 feet down the siding by the impact.

Sgt. Tony Souza said police had recovered the woman’s cell phone on the railroad siding – phone records indicating she had unsuccessfully tried to call friends before going onto the tracks. Fifteen minutes before walking into the train, she had called her family and told them what she was planning to do.

Officers found her late model blue Toyota parked near the Manteca Library Park – some 200 feet east of the tracks where she had left it.

Railroad crossing intersections at Yosemite Avenue, Main Street and Center Street were all closed for more than three hours while the investigation was completed by Manteca Police and the San Joaquin County Coroners’ Office.

A Manteca police chaplain was called to the family’s home in an attempt to comfort them as much as possible after they learned of the woman’s death. The victim’s name is expected to be released by the coroner’s office on Friday.

Other train-pedestrian accidents that have occurred in the stretch between Main and Center streets included a man who received a lacerated arm and a woman who was walking away from a downtown bar who fatally stepped in front of a train.

In the mid-‘90s Nancy Urata was killed on the tracks near the crossing at Center Street, officers noted.
