Ultra Music Festival
The World’s most famous outdoor electronic music event, is held annually in Miami, Florida during March.
This legendary festival has won “Best Music Event” by the International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) in 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2005, “Best International Dance Music Festival” by the Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and “Best Festival” by the Village Voice Media New Times in 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2006.
UMF Miami 2009 set a new record with more than 85,000 party people in attendance over two days, coming to Ultra from 56 countries & territories, 50 states and Puerto Rico.
Originally created as a pure EDM (electronic dance music) festival in 1999, Ultra has grown through the years to present not only the World’s hottest, biggest and best headline EDM artists (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, Underworld, MOBY, Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Erick Morillo, Deadmau5 and Paul Oakenfold, to name a few), but also crossover headline bands that incorporate EDM elements in their music and have a history, or new beginning in the EDM community and culture (The Cure, The Killers, The Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, The Bravery).
Music
UMF expanded to a 2-day festival in 2007 and now boasts 16 stages set over both days featuring more than 250 bands, DJs, artists, and producers.
Every EDM genre and sub genre is represented at Ultra (house, trance, electro, indie-rock, dance rock, techno, drum & bass, breakbeat, alternative, minimal, big beat, jamtronica and more…).
Production
Ultra Music Festival features the most cutting edge production in the industry and festival circuit, thanks in large part to an all star production team that includes Ray Steinman, Steve Leiberman, Jim Baggott, Terry Mcneill and Vello Virkhaus. Some of the production jewels of the festival include the Ultra Main Stage, Carl Cox & Friends Arena, Bayfront Stage and Mid Park Tent.
Breakthrough Talent
In addition to the big stages, UMF has always put an emphasis on creating an outlet for up and coming talent to emerge. Since 1999 there have been “locals” stages at the festival. Initially this included local, undiscovered Florida talent trying to make a name for themselves. Today this concept has evolved and grown into four different Breakthrough Stages at Ultra with more than 75 up and coming artists from all over the US, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia who participate.
Eco Village & Ultra Green
A very special element of UMF is known as the Eco Village. Established in 2004, the Eco Village is presented by Ultra for Life, an influential Non-Profit organization dedicated to uniting people in actions to protect our planet via the outlet of Music and Gathering. More than 20 charity groups and non-profit organizations set up at the Eco Village, promoting and creating awareness for their cause. Green Peace, Dance 4 Life, Life Beat, Red Cross, Animal Rights Foundation of Florida, Rescue Earth and Environment Florida are just a few who have participated and become a vital part of the Eco Village over the years. More than 45 artists play the Eco Village Sound Stage throughout the Ultra Weekend.
For the fourth consecutive year, Ultra continues taking significant steps in Greening efforts throughout the festival.
Ultra History
Created and founded in 1999 by partners Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes (an EDM promoter and the publisher of DVOX magazine at the time, respectively), Ultra’s first two years took place where the sands of Miami’s South Beach meet the Atlantic Ocean. After a truly magical debut festival, UItra was officially born. Some of the highlight performances from the beach years included Rabbit in the Moon, Paul van Dyk, Sasha & John Digweed, LTJ Bukem, Hybrid, Union Jack, Icey and Josh Wink. The attendance more than doubled the second year on the beach and so it was time to find a bigger waterfront home.
UMF settled in across the bay from South Beach at Bayfront Park & Amphitheater from 2001 thru 2005 (UMF 3-7). Here the festival thrived and expanded from 3 stages to more than 12, and with it, the opportunity was created for more people to see more artists and hear more music. Some highlight performances and memories from the bayfront years include Underworld, Paul van Dyk closing amphitheater sets, MOBY, The Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Junkie XL, The Chemical Brothers, Carl Cox & Friends Arena debut, The Streets, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Danny Tenaglia’s Be Yourself Arena, The ElectroClash Stage and Erick Morillo’s Subliminal Tent.
This era was also the beginning of the UMF/WMC alliance.
In 2005, after achieving the first ever sellout in the history of ticketed events at Bayfront Park, once again it was time for Ultra to move forward and find a newer, bigger, better home.
Bicentennial Park, next door to Bayfront Park and nestled in-between Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami, was the natural choice and has allowed Ultra to become the proper, full on music festival that it was destined to be.
Highlights at Bicentennial Park include expanding to 2 days, the Ultra Decade Edition, The Cure, The Killers, The Prodigy, Tiesto, Carl Cox closing sets in his mega-tent, The Black Eyed Peas, Fatboy Slim @ CC&F, David Guetta @ CC& F + main stage, Justice, MOBY dj @ CC&F and the introduction of new live acts that have injected fresh life into the EDM scene. Artists such as Crystal Castles, Cut Copy, Booka Shade, Pendulum, MSTRKRFT, Digitalism, The Ting Tings, Santigold, Simain Mobile Disco, Late of the Pier, Hot Hot Heat, Hard Fi and the list goes on…
Since Year One to date, Ultra has consistently grown in attendance, line-ups and production value. Solidifying the UMF partnership and continuing the course for a burgeoning future, Adam Russakoff and Charles Faibisch were brought on the core team in 2005.
The story doesn’t end here. Ultra continues to write its history as each year passes, breaking boundaries on the international festival landscape and consistently presenting the most ground breaking line-ups and production possible.
Tremendous plans are in motion for the 12th Annual Ultra Music Festival March 2010.
Get excited…it will be the best one yet!
We’ll see you there!!!
Carry On – Official UMF After Parties
2005 marked the creation of the Carry On, Ultra’s Official After Party.
The first two years of the Carry On events in Miami were held at the American Airlines Arena, next door to Bayfront Park. Both SOLD OUT with 9,000 in attendance and line-ups consisting of Sasha & John Digweed, Rabbit in the Moon, The Orb, Danny Tenaglia, Roni Size, Unkle, Hernan Cattaneo, Easy Star All Stars, Sandra Collins & Vello Virhaus, to name a few.
Miami Carry Ons 2007-2009 went underground moving from the AA Arena to large clubs in close proximately to the festival. Plans to bring the Carry On back as a high profile WMC event are in the works.
Carry On parties have also taken place at NYC’s famed Crobar nightclub and throughout various venues in Brasil.
