Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his hope for an end to conflicts around the world, in his traditional Christmas Day message from the Vatican.

In his message at St Peter's Basilica, he called on Israelis and Palestinians to stop the fighting.

He also appealed for peace in Somalia, Darfur and Ivory Coast.

An estimated 100,000 people had gathered in the square outside St Peter's in the pouring rain to hear the popes conclusion about the religious war.

In conclusion Pope Benedict feels that the ongoing religious war has been taken to far and that the Israelis and the Palestinians need to stop the killing of innocent people.
