There have been so many games in the industry that were overhyped. In the end they went on to become such huge flops that their names will never been forgotten just due to the fact that these were a combination of both commercial and critical failures.
In this thread we take a look at 10 such PS3 and X360 as well as PC Games that Flopped miserably.
Touted as the flagship title for the much hyped Six Axis controller, LAIR was a technical disaster. Even though Lair had amazing visuals and thee backing up of a fame developer in Factor 5, the game was a commercial and a critical failure. The controls were at a total loss and the game implemented a very poor motion sensing scheme. A guide was released later which helped the players understand the controls but that did not end LAIR’s woes.
Too Human is often listed as one of the most expensive games ever made, not due to the fact that game was being polished over the years, but it was languishing in development hell for a long time, not to mention the several disputes. In the end we got a mediocre product which had sheer annoying game play mechanics. The combat system was broken and the camera was terrible.
I had high expectations from Capcom’s sequel to one of the most underrated shooters of 2007, but just like any other game in the list, this game turned out to be totally disappointing. The game had serious issues in level design and the AI was broken. I know there were mix reactions to the game but according to me the game under performed in terms of is story structure and play mechanics. It was the age old shooting game just with pretty painting.
Overall Crackdown 2 was too much like its predecessor. The Co-op was only online; while competitive modes aren’t so great. Lacking a good soundtrack the same song is played over and over again at different tempos. Crackdown 2 suffered multiple major setbacks with much of the same game play as of the original. This game simply should not have existed.
Controversy is another name for APB. The game was bombarded with bad reviews overall, but there was more to follow. Just a few months after the game’s launch Realtime Worlds announced that the servers will shut down soon which was then followed by K2 purchasing APB. The game will be launched again for free sometime in 2011. But the question is who will play this?
There was a ton of hype behind Haze and it turned out to be total disaster. The legion of PlayStation 3 fans claimed this will be the next “Halo Killer” after the horrible outing of the original Killzone on the PlayStation 2, but much to their misfortune the game suffered from a terrible story line and artificial intelligence. Not only that, the game also had bland game play and graphics and a really bad lead in Shane Carpenter.
I think Nier had loads of potential but it really was wasted by a lot of shenanigans. Its way longer than it needs to be and there are loads of features that should never have been put in. I think the focus of the game should have been on the visuals and the story being a little more in depth. If they could go back and remake this game with less crap in it and a lot more story development than it might be a successful title.
The movie was one of the best experiences I have had in recent years. But the game does not deliver on any aspect and becomes a culmination of crap. With more time they could have had a great game on their hands that could do for movie games what the movies does for movies. Instead we are left with a good looking shell that hides everything mediocre beneath it.
The fall of Japanese gaming industry is evident with Tecmo Koei releasing one of the most horrible third person shooters in recent years. Quantum Theory was a bad attempt to make a name among western gamers and a Gears of War rip off that never actually took off. A bland protagonist and storyline worse than a 1980’s 8 bit game, Quantum Theory is game that you should run away from.
The original Viva Pinata was an innovative game for the casual audience among the Xbox 360 owners, but unfortunately the sequel Viva Pinata: Party Animals under performed in just about every factor the original succeeded. Again just like Crackdown 2, Party Animals was nothing but a half hearted sequel.
This game truly could've done better, I'm sure if they were given more time they would've at least tested the Ps3 version and seen how much people are actually suffering because of some small issues that can easily be fixed on their end. This way people would actually enjoy it!
Lair was actually a good game once they fixed the controls. IMO opinion it is one of the BEST games graphically... AND IT WAS LIKE THE FIRST GAME RELEASED ON PS3.
If they made the controls the way they are now instead of on release (when you had to use 6 axis the game would have been epic)... I don't even think I finished the game cuz of the 6axis controls and never picked it back up after they fixed it because I lost my game save and I was pretty far.
