The Bozeman Trail ran right through Bighorn Mountains Hunting Grounds. Angered, a battle broke out leaving Native Americans with victory. Native American encounters along the Bozeman trail were common until the government finally decided to close it down. The Sioux were forced to sign the treaty of Fort Laramie pushing them to settle along the Missouri River Reserve. Almost all tribe leaders of the Sioux signed it. Sitting Bull, leader of the “Hunkpapa” tribe was the only one not to sign it. He was one of the leader’s that would host rituals involving him foreseeing events. This eventually got him arrested by the Native American police and killed in December, 1890.
Struggling through poverty and disease, they turned to ritual dances involving gathering of all the Sioux which was led by Sitting Bull. This is when he was killed by the police. Because of this another leader Chief Big Foot let the Sioux away. December 28, 1890 General Custer’s old Calvary rounded up the 300 Sioux that were starving and freezing and took them to a camp up at Wounded Knee creek located in South Dakota. The next day demanded for the Sioux to all turn in their weapons. After this command a gun was fired but no one know whose it was. Soldiers opened fire on the Sioux with deadly cannons killing every Sioux at the camp within 30 minutes including the little children. This marked the end of the Native Americans as well as the entire era.
