This Is Why You Shouldn’t Eat Happy Meals

Aagh…. if I could take back all of the McDonald’s Happy Meals I’ve eaten over the years. Worse yet, if I could only take back the ones I’ve fed my children.

And I promise, I’m sharing this without judgement. Heaven knows I am the last to throw a stone here. But I just had to share this if you haven’t seen it already.

Sally Davies brought home a McDonald’s Happy Meal (plain burger, no condiments, with plain fries) and placed it on a white china plate. She left it there for six months and photographed the food every day then posted the photos on line.

Ewww…. the Happy Meal remained happy.

That’s to say, it didn’t decompose at all. At least that’s what the photos portray. That Happy Meal looked exactly the same (in my opinion) at the end of the six months as it did on the first day. Aargh!!!! How many of these things have I eaten in my lifetime? Worse yet, how many have I fed my kids?

What to do? Personally it’s just easier to sit in my little bubble of ignorance, but unfortunately I just can’t this time. After spending the past couple of years diligently increasing my awareness and understanding of mass fast food production, I wasn’t surprised in the least when I heard about the non-decomposing Happy Meal story.

One of my personal motto’s is, “You don’t know what you don’t know”… so I can’t judge or condemn myself for what’s done or in the past.

I can only move forward, and choose not to feed it to my kids or eat it myself anymore.

Here’s a blurb of the story courtesy of the website Gizmodo.

Sally Davies bought a McDonald’s Happy Meal on April 26, 2010.

She placed it on her coffee table, uncovered, and took photos every day for six months. This video shows the results, which are quite scary.

I heard about this from story from my almost 15 year old son. Even he was taken aback and disturbed.

Update: McDonald’s has released an official reply to this experiment.

180 days—and she says there were no worms, mold, smell, or visible decomposition of any kind.

Perhaps you have seen similar things before, but the fact that anyone can repeat this simple experiment, the fact that a burger and fries can survive through six months—including New York‘s fierce summer—is just scary and gross. Even more so than knowing how chicken nuggets are made and sterilized. Sally talked about his experiment to Good Morning America.

What I want to know now is what kind of technology does McDonald’s use to create these things. Is a Happy Meal scientifically considered inert matter? Is it made of carbon-based polymers? Can it be recycled into jet fuel? They taste marginally better than asbestos, so it must be okay to use them to build houses.

I have no answers for you, but I hope there’s a lesson in this for all of you, dear parents, would-be-parents, and I-don’t-want-kids-but-I-like-Happy-Meals-anyway people out there.

Well, I guess you can decide for yourself. Sometimes it boils down to the simple fact that we get to choose.

I bet you could prove that McDonalds cooks their food with cyanide and people would still eat there.

Not even the bread went mouldy? Hmmm.... And for saying she didnt touch it for a staggering 180 days its quite suprising the plate or the food didnt seem to gather dust.. And no house is dust free. What did she do? Polish it?

Call me a twat but im skeptical that burger was left out for 180 days.
