Ive heard many high schools in New York have been reading the novel, Chinese Cinderella, in there 9th grade global/english class and having to write an essay on it. So here is my essay that i crammed in the last day before it was due. I got like an 85 lol, but this is just to help people get some ideas.
Ryan McCabe Chinese Cinderella
In the book, Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah, from the moment Wu Mei was born, she was hated by most of her family members because her mom died giving birth to her. Her dad didnt know her Chinese name, her sibling called her a murderer and said she had bad luck. But she loved her school, because no matter how much she was hated at home, the kids at school treated her equally.
One day, when Wu Mei came home with a badge of good school work, her dad praised her, for the first time since she was born. This caused her to try harder because she wanted her dads love, her siblings hated her though because she took away their mom and fathers attention. Big Sister, had her left arm paralyzed during birth and so Adeline was like her slave. She was forced to call her step mother Niang which meant mother in Chinese. Her Nai Nai (Grandma) told her too. Niang was like the leader in the house when Adeline's grandma died and her Nian hated her for going against her when Niang kept beating her little daughter. When her siblings got a tram fare, Adelin was left behind. Aunt Baba was one of Adeline's closest friends. Aunt Baba was her Dia Dia(dad) older sister. She had no money and kids of her own so Adeline was put in her room and together, almost inevitably, they became close friends. But Adelines closest friend was her grandpa. Her grandpa was kind and gentle but her but Niang hated him, and when he died no one cried but Adeline and Aunt Baba.
Wu Mei is forced to live a life at home full of neglect at home. She deals with the conflict by making friends. She makes friends at her school because the kids there do not care about where she came from or how rich or poor she is. But later in her life she moves to a boarding school where there are a lot of rich people who do not like her because she is poor.
One day after school she has to wait outside for someone to pick her up but they never show up and she is forced to walk several blocks through the unfamiliar streets of Shanghai to try and find her way to her home.
The novel is resolved when Adeline is old enough to move out and becomes a writer. Adeline learned to be independent and self-reliant at a very young age witch helped her preserver her career. In this story the conflict changed Wu Mei in a good way by making her become stronger as an adult. When Wu Mei was younger she wasn’t loved and had to take on life by herself. When she got voted for class president her family did not congratulate her. When they did congratulate her, it was by urinating in orange juice and serving it to Wu Mei. So with these conflicts when Wu Mei got older she was more independent and stronger as an adult.
Wu mei was transformed into a stronger Women by the abuse she suffered during her child hood. I feel that this book was very sad and upsetting. I think that she defenetly should not have been treated the way she was. If I was in her place , im not sure how I would deal with the situation.
