Hmm... Maybe it just has to do with the size of my school, but I don't really have an issue with trying to be in the "in" crowd. Nearly all of my friends (myself included) are nerds.
I'd say the major difference between school and real life - or rather, the one I'm most concerned with right now (as a junior in high school) is the fact that you don't always have a clearly defined goal to work toward, and when you do, you aren't graded on your performance in achieving it.
Back on topic: Firstly, I didn't learn to walk or talk in Elementary school. I'd hope you'd know how to do that by then. Secondly, I didn't learn to pick on other kids in elementary. If you did, people must hate you IRL. But of course Elementary school is going to be the most important. The most important part of anything is how it starts. If the beginning of a book or movie is terrible, do you want to continue watching it? No, you don't. If the beginning of school sucks, are you going to look for forward to the rest of it? No, you won't.
