Official Reputation System Debate

An official debate regarding the reputation system with the goal of reaching a majority decision to either keep the reputation system removed or reinstate it.

Debate Rules:
1. No flaming, spamming or disrespectful words towards other debaters.

2. Only post truthful and factual arguments either supporting or not supporting the rep system and/or the reinstatement or decision to keep the reputation system removed.

3. No suggestions. This is not a discussion. This is a debate only.

4. Keep posts short to medium length. Get your supportive arguments in, leave out personal opinion.

With these rules being said, I ask everyone to post the reasons they believe that the reputation system should either be reinstated or left disabled. However, I do not want personal opinions in this matter. This is to serve as a aide in helping the upper staff of NGU to reach a decision on this issue, through the members of the forum. Remember, respect your fellow debaters. This thread will be heavily maintained, so don't waste your time spamming. If you're not here to debate this issue, don't bother posting anything. All off topic and non-debate related posts will be removed.

*Note to mods: This thread was developed with the permission of an administrator. Do not close, trash or delete this thread without consulting the administrator first. PM me for which admin to speak to.*

io think removing rep was a bad decision.
1. you cannot tell who is trustworthy.
2. A lot more scams will happen
3. a lot more trolling
theres more but he said keep it short:p

i think it should of stayed.
we voted for it to stay but the admins couldnt handle a little complaining. just kinda lazy on our admins.

but i think it should still be here.

Rep removal was a slightly bad decision.. alot of rep whores are leaving or threatning to leave..

I don't know who's trustoworthy anymore and yes I did judge people trustworthyness by their rep If I didn't know them.
If someone had alot of neg rep I could see I would not trade with them.

I could really say alot more but rep should not have been removed, It was a part of the site and also don't see why It should not have been even frozen instead of completley removed.

Overall I think It should be kept whether fully kept or frozen.

Okay so here's a 5 good points and 5 bad points of the rep system.

---Positives of rep---

1)Gives people an achievement Sad Awesome
2)Makes people want to post more in-depth threads
3)Gives people a little reward for helping others
4)Easy to spot trolls
5)Easy to spot scammers

---Negatives of rep---

1)Over powers the shoutbox with talk about the subject
2)People boost for a bigger e-penis
3)Staff get numerous messages about members getting -repped
4)People are judged on rep (popular but stupid one)
5)People abuse it

There's many more for each topic...these just came to mind.

Once again I'd like to state that this thread is not for posting your personal opinions on whether or not the removal of rep was good or bad. This is a thread dedicated solely for the purpose of arguing the topic of whether rep should stay removed, or be reinstated. Posts like "I think removing rep was bad because..." will be removed to make space for convincing arguments from both sides of the topic. There are already countless threads for that purpose.

The reputation system needs to stay removed.

The system has been useless for some time now. It's intended use no longer has a function on this website due to people abusing the system. Members are using the rep system as a means of false importance, when it should have been used as a means of social importance. By this I mean; using the rep system to reflect how much a person can help you, the amount of effort a person takes in his/her posts, the dedication to helping others via information provided by said posts. These are just a few of the intended purposes of the rep system. Instead, people are using the system to showcase to others how "cool" they are. This can never work.

The first mistake a governing body can do is allow the people it represents to have a form of power greater than that governing body itself. The reputation system did this. It allowed the members to form a sort of heir-archy, which resulted in the further abuse of the system. The cycle will only continue if the reputation system is reinstated.

My argument, for rep being reinstated, would be to limit rep power so everyone has the same and gives the same whether it be to + or -Rep, just to keep it fair and stop people boosting.

Boosters were/are people who couldn't/can't produce any good content worthy of people's thanks and reputation, so they took it their way and boosted to seem better. That was their decision and no-one should care of their rep.

If a user boosted, no-one should complain, they should just receive possibly a usertitle that says Rep Booster or something.

Reasons it should be added back are so that people have something to work for, and can feel a sense of pride about the content they have produced rather than seeing a few Likes on their thread. Rep can Make or Break someone's commitment to the site.

The reason I think it should stay removed is so that staff do not have to waste their time moderating the forums and working hard at keeping the forum steady, dealing with useless reports of people rep boosting and being victimized by people with high rep, -Repping them. It's just not fair that people decide whose worked harder just because of a number under their name.

Limit Rep and -Rep and keep it controlled.

1. you cannot tell who is trustworthy.

Rep is not a good way to judge this, a bigger number does not indicated someone trustworthy. perhaps a system that gives this without the number

2. A lot more scams will happen

Going to happen regardless, rep will not fix this.

3. a lot more trolling

People will troll, numbers will do nothing to fix this either. There are those whose sole purpose is to be stupid, rep will not change that.

I have to agree with the admins, this is a problem and far to often abused, flamed, and just general bitching over it. Good riddance I say. That is my opinion, feel free to disagree. Smile
