Iceland's volcano looks to be a real showstopper for travel in Europe in the coming days, despite media reports that seem to be playing it down. The ash may be a different composition than last year's volcano, but it can still choke a jet engine. My sister works for a major airline and says that some scheduled trips even from here in the 48 up to Alaska are being cancelled.

Meanwhile, I read recently that officials at Yellowstone are saying (to paraphrase) that the caldera has gone into a sort of remission. Very hard to believe. There are certainly trust issues with USGS and other agencies regarding their oversight of this situation. According to James Lovelock, in his book Revenge of Gaia, global warming generates a homeostatic response from the Earth that releases accumulating heat up through the crust. So we're not out of the woods. If anything, we should see a lot more activity as we approach the solar maximum in 2013.

Earthquake Summary: During the month of May, 91 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest was a magnitude 2.2 event on April 13 at 7:11 AM MDT, located about 15 miles southeast of West Thumb, YNP. A small swarm of 24 earthquakes was recorded on April 14, located about 5 miles east of West Thumb, YNP, with magnitudes ranging from M 2.0 to M -0.1.

Check out this picture the aurora looks a bit weird... usually when i check this the blank spot is directly over the pole. I know it's probably nothing but could this be Evidence that the pole has shifted a bit?
