Could it be true?

A couple of days ago, I received a text message from a friend of mine. In that text he had told me that cold is mental and along with that he tells me a story. There was a guy who walked into a walk in freezer. To that poor guy's surprise, the door mysteriously shut closed and didn't open.

The guy, not knowing the freezer was broken (not working or something), began writing letters to family members and friends. Those messages quickly came to an end with the phrase "I cannot write anymore as my fingers are starting to freeze." (Not word for word...)

The following day, workers arrived at the scene only to discover a dead body in a freezer. It was proven that the freezer wasn't working or it was shut off and the temperature never dropped below 50 degrees. The guy pretty much imagined him dying and apparently, it came to be a reality.

Now, something that has caught my attention is, if cold is mental, what else is? I guarantee that 90% of people reading this is no idiot and knows that your brain tells you what to do, what to think about, and it also sends your body emotions. Since that guy thought that he was at a point in which his bones were starting to freeze, why can't anything else be mental? I mean, pain could be mental, the warm temperature could be mental, and etc.

If pain is mental, you could do almost anything that is not fatal and feel no pain. The only reason we feel pain is because we have been taught that pain is real and exists. We do not bite off our fingers because our brain tells us not to. If we could somehow make the brain think the opposite, we would be able to feel no pain.

What do you guys think?

I had this discussion in Science few weeks back, if we think it, it will happen, if you get shot and you sit there thinking I'm dead I won't survive chances are you will die as you are giving into your bodies ability.
Some people can get shot multiple times and survive, there are also some people that got shot in the finger and died just from the shock of it.
It applies to everything, if you are sick and you give into that sickness and say yeah I'm sick I will never get better you are telling your body to give in, if you don't even give it a thought you have a high chance of fighting it off.

Can't really give you a source to read more as it was from my teacher and I've finished for the year, but you can do some research on it if you think you can find something, good luck Smile

And what if the judgements we make are already predetermined by a much powerful force that we are not aware of?

We sense things through our nerves. The nerves first send this response to the spinal cord; which determines the best course of reaction. Then, the spinal cord sends the sense from the nerve to the brain. The brain logs the information and determines what to do next. Say you put your hand on metal that's been baking in the sun all day. Your immediate reaction is OW! That's hot! Your spinal cord sends the message to take your hand off of the metal. You may have burned your hand in the process, so your brain sends the messages to repair the tissue.

I wouldn't say I wholly believe in this. If there is no pain to be sensed, then it can't do harm. If someone's aiming a gun at you, you aren't going to die because you imagined yourself getting shot. You can think about it all you want, but until the bullet hits you, you have no chance of dying. However, may he have died of grief or claustrophobia? I do believe someone can die from either of those reasons. They make assumptions and just 'give up on life.' I'm going to be tortured here, so I better just give up now. My life is over...I'm never going to see my family again, all the things I wish I could've done with my life...etc. Those are probably thoughts that would run through one's mind, giving them the option of just giving up.

The man actually dying from hypothermia is bullshit. Your nerves sense the cold, they send messages to the Hypothalamus; the part of the brain that monitors and controls your body temperature and other, now irrelevant things. You can't "make up" coldness. It's either cold or it isn't. You can't give yourself hypothermia. You can't even lower your bodily temperature. You can raise it, but not enough to cause hyperthermia. If you just mimic shivering and start saying It's so cold, you'll just raise your bodily temperature.

Neither cold or heat is mental. In this specific situation his mind played tricks, but this does not definitively prove that ALL feelings of cold are only mental.

Sensors for cold, pain and heat. Nothing to do with ones mental ability. Nerve endings.

Well, Judging by this program I re-call watching, Wim Hof holds 9 world records for extreme exposure to conditions. Watch this video, research him personally and you'll be astonished.

The latter video is beyond belief, He puts it down to an "internal thermostat"... Could be more proof to back up your argument.

the brain and body are different. The body is acting off of our senses, whereas the brain is a product of knowledge. Your senses will only get you so far before they deceive you, whereas your mind/brain will know much more beyond what your senses will ever tell you. Check out Descartes' melting wax theory, you might find it interesting.
