I have a regular hdpvr and it records amazing. There is no difference between the gaming edition and the regular besides the fact that its green instead of blue and the gaming edition comes with compoment cables. For mics I would suggest you buy the blue snowball mic. its amazing and all the top commentators use them. For extras i "bought myself" sony vegas pro 11, photoshop cs5 extended, and adobe after affects just for the fun of it. It is all up to you though.

There's a lot of different brands of HD-PVRs.

The ones I know of are:
Haupaugge HD-PVR / HD-PVR Gaming Edition You must login or register to view this content. You must login or register to view this content.
Black-Magic Intensity You must login or register to view this content.
AVerMedia Game Capture HD You must login or register to view this content.
Elgato Game Capture HD You must login or register to view this content.

The one I prefer is the Black-Magic Intensity, but that's just opinion. You can go with whatever you want. Do your research; use Google, YouTube, etc.

And for a mic to use for commentating, for beginners, I'd go with the Blue Snowball Microphone You must login or register to view this content.
If you want, you could get a Blue Yeti Microphone, but I'd only suggest getting this one once you're partnered You must login or register to view this content.

Sorry, the XBOX mic wouldn't work. The jack on the XBOX mic is 2.5mm ; the mic jack on a computer/laptop is 3.5mm.

To be honest, I wouldn't even recommend a mic that uses the mic jack; I'd use a USB mic.

The cheapest decent USB mic I could find for you is the Behringer C-1U You must login or register to view this content..
