Built using the ever popular development tool Arduino, Woven is a new way of controlling games that hopes to change the video game industry. In essence, it's a suit that a gamer would wear that is packed with sensors, measuring factors such as heart rate, position and movement speed in order to let you control the game.
As you can see from the image, it's far from finished; or at least you'd like to think that. As of now, the Woven looks like some sort of reject from a 60's Doctor Who episode. Despite Wearable Games' best effort to make it look cool, it falls way short of the mark and that is a problem. What's more shocking is the fact that this design is currently the design which is planned to go on sale. Video Games are something that people like to do in groups, and lets be honest no self respecting human being would enjoy wearing such an unflattering item of clothing, hence why at the very least there's room for development.
However we need to ask ourselves this, is it worth the extra development? The amount of time it would take devs to create a game to utilize this technology would make it an expensive and time consuming task, and in the end is this just a gimmick? Sure, if they sorted out the look it would be a laugh; something to show your mates after a few drinks; but are they completely missing the mark? Casual gamer's make up the majority of the gaming market, and putting on a suit in order to use a game is just too much hassle. At the end of the day, who would actually like to control a video game using their heart rate?
It is important to note that this device does have some pieces of technology worth mentioning. It has vibration feedback, a three colour LED screen and inbuilt speakers, which I'm sure make a very immersive gameplay experience. Imagine being shot on an FPS game, and physically feeling the impact on your chest as the bullet hits you; that's pretty cool.
In my eyes though, the gaming world isn't ready for this yet. It's filling a gap that doesn't exist as such, and until there is a higher demand for wearable controllers I can't see it working. What do you think? Would you like to see more innovative ways to control games, and in what way do you think Woven would work?
