Depersonalization disorder

Depersonalization disorder (DPD) is a dissociative disorder (ICD-10 classifies the disorder as an anxiety disorder) in which the sufferer is affected by persistent or recurrent feelings of depersonalization and/or derealization. Common descriptions of symptoms are: feeling disconnected from one's physicality; feeling as though one is not completely occupying the body; not feeling in control of one's speech or physical movements; feeling detached from one's own thoughts or emotions; a sense of automation, going through the motions of life but not experiencing it or participating in it; loss of conviction with one's identity; feeling a disconnection from one's body; inability to accept ones reflection as one's own; difficulty relating oneself to reality and the environment; feeling as though one is in a dream; and out-of-body experiences'.

Now I am a person with this disorder. I had not found out until recently which started to explain some of the symptoms. Basically broken down 'depersonalization' is being disconnected from your personality. There are high stress, axiety, sometimes even some instances of skitzophrania. You feel disconnected at some times and you can't control it. It really sucks. It happens more, and more at times through the hall, in a store, even at home just watching tv.

What it feels like:
Light usually transitions into a bright light, and your vision kind of goes back. You then go into a very deep thought about what you are, or what you're doing, and why you're doing it. You are continuously judging yourself and a major of the time you feel like everyone is judging you.

What's the weirdest part in my honest opinion?:
Just the fact that you don't feel like yourself, you feel as if you can't control yourself at times and it's weird getting a 3rd persons perspective about yourself from yourself. It just seems impossible.

When did I get it?:
I had few symptoms of it around my adolescent years (12-14) and it happened so little it wasn't even enough to diagnose myself with the disorder. After I started smoking weed it got more intense, and started happening more often. So I suppose it's predisposition. It felt really weird and I didn't even know it was a disorder.

I would like your output on this, how do you feel, or how do you think you would coop with this. If you do have this order I would like to hear your experiences as well. Smile

So from what I gather... you get a kind of third-person perspective of yourself, and when you do this you are as far as other people can tell acting completely normal?

Does it give you perspective on your own personality that most people would normally miss about themselves, or have I kinda got the wrong end of the stick here? Smile

So it seems it makes you only focus on the negatives about yourself and none of the positives? And then you begin to think that is all other people think? Or do you begin to not accept that the person you see when you're in this "state of mind" is yourself?

Sorry for all my questions but I personally have never heard of this disorder before and I do not know anyone affected by it.

Basically, but most of the time it's a bad thing, because you don't feel involved with yourself so It can feel depressing.

This sounds like you're, uh, a normal human being that judges himself to a degree of conscious reality. Sometimes life sucks, we all feel sad or antisocial - it's a normal human characteristic. If you're having trouble keeping focus on an activity - maybe you need to find a better activity.

Seriously, people will give a name to anything to benefit pharmaceuticals.

Try being a 6 and a half foot tall ginger. Than people seem to notice you a lot more... Add on certain symptoms of your diagnosis and a whole lot of paranoia then you have me lol. Quick question, Do you ever try and change yourself (style, looks etc) based on the negative judgments, you perceive others to make? I only ask because I'm the same way.

No it is different than that. Its extremely difficult to explain its only explainable by personal experiences.
